What is your Superpower?
What's your Superpower?
As my staff are starting to realize, I like to ask random questions. "What is the one thing you would want to have on a deserted island?" Picture them all staring at me or rolling their eyes as they realize I actually want an answer.
At home, it is no different. As we watch the new Marvel movie on this blizzardy day, my question to my family is "What superpower would you want?" When we are trapped by a snowstorm, I can patiently wait for an answer....
I believe everyone has a super power. Growing up, I had no idea what I would want mine to be, nor did I have any idea what it COULD be. I watched so many classmates who were excellent at volleyball, or basketball, or baseball, or singing, or dancing, or (you get the picture). Don't get me wrong, I played the guitar. I was good. I wasn't GREAT. I was in musical theater. I wasn't GREAT. I achieved good grades.....but there was always someone with better grades than me. I entered triathlons. Cool...I was not GREAT. Am I proud that I finished them? Yes. But NOT my superpower lol. As a veterinarian, I felt like I was good at what I did....but was I great? As a rehab vet I feel like I am really good at what I do.....but am I great? Is it my superpower? Is my inability to call anything a superpower related to my comparing myself to others?
So I sit and ponder what my superpower is.... I balance a family. I am a mom, a wife, a daughter, and a sister. I am a veterinarian. I am a boss. I judge and critique my ability to do any one of these things and call them my super power. But.......my ability to do ALL of these things.....that is something indeed. I have created a world in which I truthfully love the outcomes I get for my patients. I have assembled a team that inspires me every day and makes me look forward to going to work. We make dogs walk again....that's a pretty big superpower :). Do I make mistakes? Oh absolutely.....in all aspects of my life!!!! I learn from them and pick myself back up again. Most of all, despite finding it difficult to turn my work brain off when I am at home, I have created a lifestyle that allows me to adjust my schedule to be there for my kids at their many extracurricular events! THAT is a superpower.
Superpowers come in all shapes and sizes. Our ability to have made it through the last two years in and of itself is a superpower. So maybe you are an amazing artist. Maybe you are an amazing dog trainer. Maybe your penmanship is spectacular!!! Maybe you have the patience of a saint. Or maybe your house is so clean you could eat off of the floor (in which case I would like to hire you because that is NOT my superpower!!!). Maybe you run an amazing non-profit organization or are someone that inspires other people. Whatever it is we all have something that makes us amazing.
So....what is YOUR superpower?
